With 3 locations in the Des Moines, Iowa area, Smokey D’s BBQ has become a staple of what makes Competition BBQ so great. Starting from a competition team, the Smokey D’s guys took their success from the competition circuit and created a restaurant that allows everyone to try their amazing products anytime they want. Throughout the restaurant, you will see their success with novelty checks, ribbons, and giant trophies. This includes their three 1st place trophies from the American Royal!
Smokey D’s BBQ was founded in 2006 after 5 years of success on the competition circuit. They were featured on Food Network’s Diner’s, Drive In’s, and Dives as well as seeing many continued successes on the competition circuit. Smokey D’s BBQ is one of the very few restaurants in Iowa that is actively competing on the KCBS circuit throughout the year. On average they compete in 25-35 contests each season, including a number of the same competitions as The BBQ Mavens.
When visiting the restaurant, parking can be at a premium. Don’t let that deter you from stopping in to get some awesome BBQ, and take a few laps if you don’t have any luck! These burnt ends and ribs were as great as they look. Also, every one of the sides I have tried have been fantastic, especially the beans! Be sure to try some variety with one of their sampler plates, as you won’t want to choose between all of these great types of BBQ! And finally, the one item that is a must get for me, is the Apple Dumpling! This dessert was featured on Triple D, and is as good as advertised!
