How to Have Fun in the Rain

When you visit Walt Disney World and Orlando, there is a very good chance you will experience rain at least once. By no means does this mean your day in the parks has to stop! There are a ton of things to do at Walt Disney World during a rain storm. Also, if you follow a few of these tips, you might just look forward to some rain on your next trip!  Make sure not the throw in the towel, beat the heat, and enjoy your Disney trip even if there is rain!

Before Arriving at the Parks

Before your trip to Walt Disney World, you can make a potential rain storm less impactful by being prepared.  Of course, a hurricane or torrential storms are a bit of a different story, so be sure to check the weather reports!  For your normal daily rain storm, be sure to stop by Target or Amazon to buy disposable ponchos to have for the parks.  Disney will sell those bright yellow ponchos with Mickey Mouse on the back, but they are pricy, and difficult to carry around when they get wet.  The $0.99 poncho at target works great for what you need, and then you can just throw it away!  Also, waterproof (or quick drying) shoes, shirts, and shorts make life a lot easier.  For kids, you might even want to have a change of each in your bag just in case.  You also might want to bring a spare pair of socks because there is nothing worse than wet socks.

In the Parks

While you are in a theme park, you can set your watch to a 3pm rain storm during the summer.  It is almost a daily occurrence and if you time it right, you are in luck!  People tend to flee to shows and shops during the storm, but if you have a poncho, waterproof clothes, and some motivation, these windows are a great time to get on a line for a ride!  During a storm, outdoor rides will shut down, but indoor rides are still going to run.  Hitting a ride in Pandora, Space Mountain, or Frozen Ever After would get you out of the rain, and a lot of people might not want to run to the queue.   With FastPass+, a storm closing an attraction during your window would give you an Anytime Fastpass!  These are like gold in the right hands, so some people try to time rain storms for FastPasses with outdoors rides to try and snag one!  If you know rain is in the forecast, give it a try!

The Disney Parks Blog shared some of their own tips for how to beat the rain in the parks as well!

At the Resorts

A lot of people try to build a pool day into their vacation.  Electrical storms and pools do not mix, so often times people are kicked out of the pool during the storms.  During these storms, you can always grab some food, go to the arcade, ride the SkyLiner or Monorail, or any number of free activities around the Disney Resorts.  Be careful of giving up on a plan too quickly because of a rain storm because sometimes they last only a few minutes.  Othertimes it might be an hour.  Check the weather forecast, and try to have a backup plan in mind if you are traveling with small children!

Disney Springs

Visiting Disney Springs is a great option during a rain storm.  With a bowling alley (Splitsville), movie theater (AMC), and the VOID, there are tons of opportunities to be inside that will be fun for the whole family.  Dining and shopping options are also a great way to get out of a quick rainstorm.  Most of Disney Springs is not covered, but you can definitely find shelter if needed!
