How to Properly store Fruits and Vegetables

Most times, people bring their produce home from the store, and throw it all in the refrigerator until they are ready to cook with it.  That works for a lot of produce, but a few items should really stay on the counter or in a nice place out of the way.

Avoid the Fridge

  • Tomatoes
  • Onions/Shallots/Garlic
  • Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
  • Hard Squash (butternut and acorn)
  • Plums, Peaches, and Cherries
  • Pineapples
  • Melons

Investing in a fruit bowl or having somewhere out of reach from kids and dogs will help keep your produce tasting great and last as long as possible!  For the potatoes, for example, by keeping these in a cool (not cold), dry dark place (like a drawer) you will avoid getting them to sprout.  Bulbed vegetables, like onions and garlic also like these sorts of environments and want to breathe.  Keeping them on a shelf in your pantry will help them last for quite a while!  It will also help when you go to mince garlic as the clove will be fresh and not dried out.
