How to Get More Juice From Citrus

If you are cooking or baking, and need to add citrus (lemons, oranges, etc) juice to the recipe, you want to make sure you get all the juice possible.  How can you do this?  There are a few tips that can help make sure you get the most juice from each piece of citrus.  These are key in making sure you don’t go through too many lemons or, if you’re making a cocktail, that you get 1 more drink in!

Ways to get more juice:

  1. Roll the citrus prior to cutting it.  Doing this will break the internal membrane of the citrus allowing it to produce more juice.  Then, once you cut the fruit, it should be much juicier than had you not rolled it.
  2. Heat the citrus in the microwave prior to cutting it.  Heating it for 10 to 20 seconds prior to cutting the citrus will cause more juice to be produced!  Don’t put it in for too long, though, as you don’t want to cook the fruit!
  3. Use a fork.  After cutting the citrus, use the prongs of a fork to pierce the fruit and that will create more juices.

I hope these tips help you with citrus the next time you cook.  If you want to spice up fruit presentation, try to supreme your citrus when serving it!  Also, try this tip out on an awesome Citrus Sweet and Sour Sauce.
