How To Separate an Egg
In many recipes, especially when baking, it will call for an egg yolk or egg white. To do this can seem tricky at first, but hopefully, this tip can help you successfully separate an egg!
Step 1: Over a small bowl, crack your egg very carefully. Ideally, this bowl will be for your egg whites. Open the egg slowly and the egg white will start to drop into the bowl.
Step 2: Assuming the eggshell did not break so that it cannot be used, pour the remaining egg back and forth between the two halves so that the egg white is dropping into the bowl below. If the eggshell broke, you might need to use another small bowl to help in this process.
Tip: If the yolk falls into the bowl with the egg whites, I like to use the eggshell to scoop it back up so that I do not break the yolk in the bowl. You could also pour the contents of the bowl into another bowl and block the yolk while pouring, especially if the yolk is starting to run.
Step 3: Once you have separated the yolk and the egg whites you can put the yolk from the shell into the second bowl, repeat as needed, and can start your recipe!
I hope this tip helps the next time you start baking!
